4 Pairs of Shoes You Need in Your Closet

I’m a shoe lover. OR at least I think I am. But then I look at my closet and realize I pretty much wear the same pairs of shoes over and over and over. So, in order to simplify, I’m categorizing the 4 styles of shoes that are must-haves (in my opinion), and I’m ditching the rest. That’s not to say you can’t or shouldn’t have more than one shoe per category. What I’m setting out to prove here is that a well-rounded day-to-day Spring wardrobe only requires 4 styles of shoes.

Sneakers that are perfect for this Spring!
  1. The Mule or Loafer – Loafers & mules have come a long way since your mom and dad’s wardrobe from 1995. I love getting a pair that has a touch of flare (see my fur-lined “TarGucci’s”* from last fall) to bring some detail to my outfits because I typically go for simple tops and denim. Try a print or (faux) animal skin- snakeskin is getting pretty big and although I DESPISE snakes, I’m actually starting to like this trend. These mules from Lulu’s are super affordable and equally trendy for spring in leopard or snakeskin.
  2. The (Feminine) Sneaker – I just got this adorable pair of pink sneakers from Sperry, and they come in a few other colors too. They are so comfortable which means they’re perfect for taking the baby to the park, but they are also cute enough to wear out to brunch or shopping with friends. I love the satin laces! A recent spin on the sneaker that I wasn’t sure about at first but now I’m beginning to love is the added wedge, like these wedge sneakers, which will probably be the next addition to my closet for Spring style.
  3. The Bootie – Okay this style of shoe is a staple year-round so it’s no surprise I included it in this list. Get a neutral color like grey or taupe that doesn’t scream fall or spring, and you can wear it pretty much any season, with any color of denim. I always check the specs and tend to stick to a 3 inch block heel, because anything higher than that just feels super impractical and hurts my knees (I’m an old lady). These are my absolute favorite pair I’ve ever owned (pictured below) and they’re currently on sale. They’re neutral, good quality, and I can wear them over and over, and over and over. And I’m dying over these Franco Sarto booties because they’re just a tad bit Western but still very classic.
  4. The Wedge– Obviously wedges are a must for busy women and especially moms, because it’s a lot harder to turn an ankle running (after your child) in wedges than it is in a stiletto. In fact, I’ve completely given up on pumps at this time in my life and don’t plan on going back… I’ll let you know if that changes. This pair of wedges by Treasure & Bond is absolutely perfect because they are so neutral- dress up some denim or pair with your Easter dress. You can also find a dupe of this shoe here, for a little less if you’re shopping on a budget.
My favorite bootie- linked in this post!

One more thing I should note about shoes- when it comes to a trendy shoe, whether it’s print or style, I tend to buy a budget version or dupe (see the inexpensive mules from Lulu’s in snakeskin). There’s no way you’ll find me splurging on a shoe that could be out of style by next year. However, when it’s a staple that can be worn multiple seasons (think neutral color, classic style) it’s worth an investment. Quality is important if you plan on wearing it more than just half a dozen times!

See? 4 pairs of kicks and your day-to-day wardrobe is complete. Now I guess it’s time for me to clean out my closet…

*My black, fur-lined mules from Target that were Gucci dupes. Dale calls them TarGucci’s and the name stuck.
